03 · Voice

How the studio sounds on the page.

Plainspoken, direct, and useful. Syntheus writing earns trust by saying what's true and skipping what isn't.

03.1

Overview

  • Voice

The character that runs through every word — a calm operator who has done the work and isn't selling.

  • Principles

The writing rules. Lead with the point. Cut adjectives. Show, don't pitch.

  • Vocabulary

Specific words we keep and words we strike. The smallest unit of voice.

Voice doesn't change between a contract and a tweet. Register adjusts. Tone adjusts. The character is the same.

Attributes

Plainspoken

Clear over clever.

We use the simplest word that fits. We don't perform expertise; we demonstrate it. If a sentence sounds like it was written for a brochure, rewrite it.

Sounds like

We help product teams ship faster by removing the parts that aren't working.

Doesn't sound like

We empower forward-thinking organizations to leverage best-in-class methodologies.

Direct

Say it, then stop.

Lead with the point. State conclusions before reasoning. Push back on weak ideas plainly. Hedging signals doubt; we either know or we don't.

Sounds like

This won't ship in two weeks. Here's what's realistic.

Doesn't sound like

We might want to consider whether the timeline could potentially be revisited.

Useful

Insight over opinion.

Every paragraph earns its place. We share what we'd want to know, not what makes us look smart. Generic advice is worse than no advice.

Sounds like

The reason your retention is flat: the second-week activation step has too many fields.

Doesn't sound like

There are several factors that could be impacting retention; let's set up a discovery workshop.

03.3

Principles

  • 01

    Lead with the point.

Conclusion in the first sentence. Reasoning after. Never bury the answer in three paragraphs of context.

  • 02

Cut adjectives, especially the flattering ones.

Strike: world-class, cutting-edge, best-in-class, innovative, robust, scalable, holistic, synergistic.

  • 03

    Use specific nouns and verbs.

"We rebuilt the onboarding flow" beats "we revamped the user experience."

  • 04

    Don't over-promise.

Never commit to scope, timeline, or outcomes without proof. "We helped them ship faster" is fine. "We 10x'd their velocity" is not.

  • 05

    No jargon, no buzzwords.

If a non-technical reader can't follow it, rewrite it. Acronyms get expanded the first time.

  • 06

    Be specific to the audience.

Generic advice is filler. Every recommendation should be impossible to write without knowing the context.

In practice

On-brand
The activation drop is at step three. Too many fields, no signal that progress is real. Cut the company-size question — you don't use the answer — and add a progress bar. Two weeks to build and test.
