Case study — Brand transformation · Web designSYN/BARS/26

The BARS Program.

For 28 years, BARS has been the independent standard for responsible alcohol retail. The company’s record was stronger than the brand carrying it.

Syntheus rebuilt the identity around that earned authority, then extended the work into a durable digital system and the next era of product development.

The company that invented the compliance check category deserved a brand that looks like the standard it enforces. The work was to close that gap.

The Archive

The old site had earned its keep, but table-based layouts, beveled buttons, and generic photography undersold a company trusted by the largest retailers in North America. The history needed to be preserved without allowing it to constrain the next chapter.

Brand Strategy

The strategy re-centered the brand on what only BARS can claim: continuous independent verification since 1998, the largest retailers in North America under measurement, and a standard its customers reach through repeated practice.

Verbal Identity

The new voice states instead of shouts. It is plain, factual, and unhurried. Numbers carry the persuasion, and sentences stay short enough to read from behind a register.

Logo

The mark condenses the program to its device: bars, held in a shield. It reads as certification at interface scale and as signage at storefront scale.

Visual Language

The system has semantics: color that means something, one typeface doing every job, and the card itself as the ownable pattern.

Photography

The brand stays in the store: shelves, registers, and the tap of a card at the point of sale. Subjects are camera-unaware, light is ambient, and every frame could be the moment before a check.

Interactive

The new site puts the program’s record where the beveled buttons used to be: pass rates, the standard, the methodology, and the evidence behind the promise.
